Beschrijving
A blind box is a sealed, opaque package that contains one random item from a specific themed series. While you know which collection the item belongs to (e.g., a specific artist’s series or brand like POP MART), you do not know which exact character or design you have received until you open the box.
Key Characteristics
- The Surprise Factor: Every box in a series looks identical on the outside, and items are often further wrapped in foil to prevent “peeking” or scanning.
- Standard vs. Secret Figures: Most series consist of several common “standard” designs and a very rare “chase” or secret figure, which has much lower odds of being found (sometimes 1 in 144).
- Sealed Cases: Collectors can often purchase a “sealed case” (usually 6, 8, or 12 boxes) which typically guarantees a full set of standard figures with no duplicates, and a higher chance of pulling a rare secret.
- Designer Art: Many modern blind boxes, popularized by companies like Pop Mart, are treated as affordable designer art toys created by specific artists.
What to keep in mind: Because many items were limited or sold out quickly, sometimes prices on resale markets can be steep; and — as with many collectible markets — value depends heavily on demand and rarity. Some collectors treat them as art rather than investments.
Why They Are Popular
The “blind box economy” thrives on the psychological thrill of the unboxing experience, which releases dopamine similar to the feeling of opening a gift or winning a small prize. This has sparked a massive trend on social media platforms like TikTok, where unboxing videos garner millions of views.
